How Often Should You Really Clean Your Carpets in Arizona?

October 09, 2026

If you Google "how often should I clean my carpets," you'll get the same answer everywhere: every 12 to 18 months.

That's fine advice, if you live somewhere mild with no dust, no pets, and no kids.

We live in Arizona. So let's talk about what actually happens to your carpets here.

The Arizona Problem: Dust Gets Everywhere

Desert dust is fine. Much finer than regular household dust. During monsoon season and windy months, it finds its way inside no matter how well sealed your home is. It settles deep into carpet fibers, down where your vacuum can't reach.

Your vacuum does a good job on the surface. But that fine layer at the base of the fibers? It builds up month after month, and it's what makes carpets look dull and feel rough even when they're "clean."

Pets Change the Math

Pet dander, hair, and the occasional accident don't just sit on top of carpet. They work their way down into the padding. If you've got a dog or cat, that 12-to-18-month guideline goes out the window. The dander buildup alone affects air quality, especially for anyone with allergies.

Kids, Shoes, and Real Life

Shoes track in dirt, oil, and whatever the sidewalk had to offer. Kids spill things. Life happens on your floors. High-traffic areas (hallways, living rooms, stairs) wear faster and trap more soil than the corners nobody walks through.

So What's the Real Answer?

Here's what we tell our customers honestly:

  • Typical household, no pets: every 12 months
  • One pet or kids: every 6 to 9 months
  • Multiple pets, kids, or allergy sufferers: every 6 months
  • Arizona dust + pets + kids (the full East Valley starter pack): every 3 to 6 months

Try This Test

Vacuum a high-traffic area slowly, like you're supposed to. Then part the fibers with your fingers and look at the base. If it looks gray or feels gritty down there, your vacuum has done all it can. The rest needs hot water extraction.

What Professional Cleaning Does That DIY Can't

Rental machines and store-bought cleaners mostly wet the surface and leave residue behind. That residue actually attracts dirt faster, so carpets look dirty again sooner.

Professional hot water extraction pulls soil out from the base of the fibers and, done right, leaves no residue. Your carpets stay cleaner longer, feel softer, and last years longer. Given what carpet replacement costs, regular professional cleaning is one of the cheapest ways to protect your flooring investment.

The Bottom Line

In Arizona, "once a year" is the minimum, not the target. Most of the homes we clean in Gilbert and Mesa do best on a 6-month rotation, and the ones with pets and kids need it even more often.

That's actually why we created the Clean Home Club: scheduled cleanings throughout the year at member pricing, so your home never gets to the point where the carpets look tired. If you're curious how it works, ask us about it.

And if it's been a while since your last professional cleaning? We'd love to help. Call or text us at (480) 568-6900. We'll give you honest advice about what your carpets actually need, even if the answer is "not yet."
